Fall 2018 Course Offerings

Level A

3rd – 5th grade

(advanced 2nd graders or struggling 6th graders with teacher approval)

Model-based writing instruction covering the first seven units of Excellence in Writing’s unique method of structure and style techniques. Topics include: note-making and outlining, summarizing from notes, narrative stories, expository writing, creative writing from pictures, reports, and inventive writing. Grammar instruction will be integrated throughout the course. Students will also be presented with opportunities for oral presentations, poetry and literature discussion, and review through games.

Length:

2 15-week semesters – Wednesdays, Orangevale

Fall Semester: Sept. 5, 2018 through Dec. 19, 2018; no class week of Nov. 21

Spring Semester: Jan. 16, 2019 through May 8, 2019; no class week of April 17

Level B

6th through 8th grade (advanced 5th/struggling 9th graders with teacher approval)

Model-based writing instruction covering all nine units of Excellence in Writing’s unique method of structure and style techniques. The first units covering note-making and outlining and writing from notes are taught at a more rapid pace than in the Level A course, moving quickly to the creative units of retelling narrative stories and writing from pictures, followed by summarizing references, formal essay models, formal critique and response to literature. Throughout the course, proper grammar usage and citation methods will be integrated into instruction. Oral presentations, poetry and literature discussions will also be included.

Recommended:

Optional literature choices are listed in the student manual to supplement the curriculum. Though their use is encouraged to enrich the student’s learning, purchase/use of titles not listed above are left to parent’s discretion, and will not be covered in class. 

All other materials will be provided at beginning of class.

9th through 12th grade students (advanced 8th graders with teacher approval)

Model-based writing instruction covering through Unit 7 of Excellence in Writing’s unique method of structure and style techniques, with focus being placed on writing notes from live lectures, study skills, advanced summarizing and style techniques, and formal essay models. Skills necessary for writing timed, in-class essays will be taught, along with opportunity for practice. Literature study using short stories and a novel-length work will provide opportunities for journaling exercises, annotation, and discussion, preparing students for college-level analysis. A public-speaking component will also be integrated throughout the course.
